Joining schools from all over the cluster area, Kuranui School students created Crazy Critters out of vegetables and fruit to promote healthy eating choices. Here are some of Room 3's creations. Well done they look good enough to eat and we caught some of you snacking on them waiting for the van.

Hey, Hey! It's Calf Club Day!!!
What a way to start Term 4!
The day dawned very wet and windy but the sun broke through about 10.30 so we had a interesting day for Calf Club. Most of Room 3 had great looking animals that had been well cared for judging by the superior leading, following and handling skills demonstrated.
Bright eyed lambs with clean coats, well filled out bodies and glossy sleek looking calves full of the beans paraded with some gorgeous goats who proved they were interested in anything on offer to eat! There was one little piggy who created quite a bit of interest and the biggest bunny that I've ever seen!!
They nibbled happily at dresses, fingers, hair...... don't you love them. There were a lot of well deserved ribbons handed out. Congratulations to everyone who took part.
Once again a student from Room 3 stepped up and with some help from her big sister presented her Pet Project as a power-point. Well done Bronlee.
Sharing our learning on Volcanoes
Alex went above and beyond in Science as he shared his learning with the school. With help from Bryn and Mrs Jones he has produced an informative and learning focused power-point to share his explanation of how volcanoes are formed, how they erupt and the changes they create on the land.
Well done Alex... we are very proud of you.
Sadly the whole power-point will not up load but here is a screen shot of the cover and the promise the contents hold. Please call into Room 3 if you wish to see the entire power-point, you are most welcome.
Another day in the Gardens
Our edible orchard is almost complete with the whole school helping to move compost and plant out cranberries, strawberries, gooseberries, blueberries, broccoli, peas and rhubarb. there are only some feijoa's and more under planting to go. Well done Kuranui School. Next term it's a 'Spud in the Bucket Competition'.
Sharing our learning in Movement and Position.
As a whole school we had a maths task to complete for our assessment of our learning in Geometry.
First we had to build a plan on a grid creating a map then we had to describe our plan followed by giving directions using points of the compass, left and right directions, number of steps or grid references to the treasure buried on our map.
Some of our completed discussions we very explicit and most of us found a piece of treasure .. well done Room 3. Thank you Room 5 for being our treasure hunters.
Katija has new ducklings !!!!
Katija has a brand new clutch of ducklings this year and there are 5 this time. Thank you for sharing them with us Katija. They are so very cute!!!

Movement and Position
In Room 3 we are currently learning about movement and position in mathematics. On Study ladder, on the blog Maths page, you can find tasks to help your child learn how to give and follow directions.
This is extremely important as in the past children have found this quite difficult to put into practice because everywhere we go, living on a farm, children get taken. It is a matter of necessity, not choice by parents and I noticed it when Bryoney was having trouble and wondered why Andrew and Catherine hadn't had the same problem.
The answer was Andrew and Catherine lived in a town and it was important to them to give and follow directions to get to the homes of friends and family.
Next time you go to take them out to somewhere familiar in the car and have time... let them be the navigator so they can practice their skills in a real world context. Giving and following instructions around an obstacle course, blindfolded, is a great rainy day activity in the garage or lounge.
In class they are doing well with left and right, clockwise and anticlockwise, north, east, south and west. Good Luck!

Wow!!! Look at those medals!
You could be confused thinking you were at the Olympics... these children have a medal haul equal to the most prestigious sporting event in the world. Well done everyone you are champions!
Wahoo! Visit to a volcano!!!
Our intrepid teacher was far too curious about the eruption of Mt Tongariro and beetled off with Andrew to check it out!!! Talk about keen. They brought us back some really cool volcanic rocks and lots of photos from the Department of Conservation Information Centre at Whakapapa Ski Village. It was a great day and plenty of information was gathered. That's inquiry learning for you!!!
No honestly we are doing maths!!!
Room 3 have been assessing their ability to create and continue patterns but have been a bit nibbly about it..... what better way to learn than eating. Just to make sure it fitted our school policy it was fruit kebabs. Yum!!!

What 's this? Hill surfing, skiing or sliding ????
The children could hardly believe it as Mrs Clark sprung a surprise on the school. "What were we going to do with plastic bags?",the children wondered. But much to their delight and surprise we hit the hill and the mud..... giggles erupted from children and soon they caught on to the possibilities the event provided. The clothes and the washing machines would fix the damage!!!
Our incredible edible gardens and orchard.
A small but hardy group of students joined Mrs Jones to plant the edible orchard. We have planted oranges, mandarins, lemons and gooseberries. The vegetable garden had a plant up to When we are able to snow peas, broccoli, rhubarb, silver beet and celery are now growing there.
Soon to come are strawberries and fruit trees when the weather co operates.

Enviro Gardens
A long awaited plan from Room 3 became a reality. Helped by some really cool Dads and Amanada from Enviro Schools, Mrs Jones and the Enviro group as well as extra helpers from Room 3,we created the outline of our new gardens. Once spring arrives we will plant an edible orchard to provide the students of Kuranui School with extra fruit through out the year.
Trees and plants from Paper for Trees have arrived and we will plant these in the next 3 weeks. Thank you everyone .... and come visit our new look.
Room 3 has talent!!!
Dylan is so enthusiastic he has driven ahead with his learning to create a musical instrument at home. he shared with us and tested it. He has thought about some modifications he can make and will test it again.
Well done Dylan, that is exactly what a technologist does!

LEST WE FORGET
In Room 3 we have started the term off doing some learning about the Anzac's and why we need to remember the heroic achievements of our servicemen and women. Their efforts provided us with the opportunity to be able to choose our own destiny as a nation and as people.
We attended a memorial service at school, read about what an Anzac parade involves and looked at what life was like for the Anzac soldiers.
We were amazed at the size of the WW1 cemeteries and discovered the memorials that our school has to these people honouring those from our community.

Maungatuatari Reserve
As part of our inquiry into the adaptive features of birds we took a trip with our parents assistance to Maungatuatari Trust Reserve. First we met Gemma at the classroom near the reserve to learn about why the reserve exists and why they need to protect the birds that live within the fence. The fence gave us plenty of need to think about its design and how the scientists came up with the end product.
Next we tramped around the mountain to view the birds in their exclusive habitat. We glimpsed Kakas, Robins, Kereru, Takahe and Piwakawaka as they danced around the exciting array of native plants.

Wheelie Day
Yahoo!! Off we go!
Constable Louise Samuels from Tokoroa Police visited Kuranui School again to reinforce the importance of Bus Safety, Safe Walking, Cycling safety and ATV safety. We were surprised and delighted when with the assistance of Fonterra- most of our farming partners- we were presented with free helmets to use on our bikes or ATV's. Thanks again Constable Samuels and to Fonterra for your time and support.

Fairytales
We have done a reading unit on fairy tales and have learnt all about the elements we can find in a fairytale such as plot, setting, characters, magic, mythical beasts, royalty, similar beginnings and endings.
While reading our fairy tales we have learnt to identify how a narrative text is put together and how the plot develops. At the end of all this we will be writing our own fairy tales in the narrative form.

Room3's Treaty
In Room 3 we have been looking at what makes a great classmate, a good citizen and ultimately great learners. We identified the good traits of excellent learners and designed a treaty to guide us into good learning habits. In the spirit of the Treaty of Waitangi we placed our marks on the agreed treaty and signed our names to seal our promise.
